Johnson Engineering and Muniz Engineering Form Strategic Partnership

Strengthening ties between local area companies, prominent aerospace contractor Johnson Engineering (JE) has partnered with Muniz Engineering, Inc. (MEI) as its principal teammate in the competition and retention of crew training and facility operations services supporting NASA's Johnson Space Center (JSC).

The partnership is unique in that it strategically pairs JE, a 30-year NASA contractor, with MEI, a growing force in the aerospace community and 2001 NASA Minority Subcontractor of the Year. A SPACEHAB company, JE has successfully led this contract since 1987, and now with the addition of MEI to the team, looks forward to offering uninterrupted quality support toward the continuation of this vital NASA contract. "MEI has proven itself in our community with solid technical capability and dedicated leadership," said JE Sr. Vice President, Travis Robinson. "We're looking forward to a smooth and successful transition with MEI by our side."

Flight crew support services provided by JE under this contract include facility operations, astronaut training, and fabrication of mockups at JSC's Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory (NBL) and Space Vehicle Mockup Facility (SVMF). JE's performance in these areas consistently earns high ratings from NASA management as well as from the flight crews themselves who train in the high-fidelity mockups at the SVMF and at the state-of-the-art JE-managed underwater training pool at the NBL.

Recently named to The Houston 100 Fastest Growing Businesses, MEI has been providing engineering, safety and product assurance, and information technology and management services to government and industry since 1992. It was this impressive line of capabilities in addition to this family-owned company's first-rate reputation in the industry that lured JE to make this critical teammate selection decision. "We're delighted to have been selected to team with JE on this initiative," said MEI President Ed Muniz. "Their experience and reputation in the JSC and surrounding community are a perfect fit with MEI's mission. We're anxious to begin providing these valuable services to JE and NASA."

JE received a five-month contract extension on this effort for the period from May 1 through September 30, 2002 with options approved for three additional one-month contract extensions. The new contract is expected to be awarded by September 2002 and will be valid for a base period of two years with three one-year firm options.

In addition to the partnership with MEI, JE will be tapping into the skills and technology offered by Synergos, a support services company including financial analysis, Government contract administration, and administrative support services; and W de Y Associates, Inc., an engineering and technical services company supporting JSC since 1984.
