SPACEHAB
EMPLOYEES RECEIVE COVETED NASA "SNOOPY" AWARD
SPACEHAB,
Inc. (NASDAQ/NMS: SPAB), a leading provider of commercial space services,
announced that six employees have been awarded NASA's Silver Snoopy award.
Provided by Space Flight Awareness, this prestigious honor is presented
to individuals for outstanding efforts that contribute to the success
of the human space flight program.
An astronaut always
presents the Silver Snoopy award because it is the astronauts' own symbol
for outstanding performance, supporting flight safety and mission success.
Astronauts Doug Wheelock and Barbara Morgan were on hand to present these
highly esteemed awards to the distinguished SPACEHAB winners.
Shannon Gumm was presented
with the award for his exceptional design and fabrication of safety upgrades
to key elements and trainers in the Space Vehicle Mock-up Facility (SVMF)
at NASA's Johnson Space Center. Specifically, his development of the Laptop
Desk Assembly received high praise from astronauts during training exercises
citing the product as very innovative and worthy of additional study as
a possible flight unit.
SVMF technician and
facility manager, Clifford Dupree, received his Snoopy for the development
and modifications of mockups and trainers in the SVMF such as the Flight
Crew Systems Lab, Node 1 upgrades, the focus cargo block, service module,
and ISS airlock. These efforts were well received as 'state-of-the-art
mockups' for use as astronaut trainers.
Patrick Donovan listened
in as Astronaut Doug Wheelock detailed to the SPACEHAB team Donovan's
impact on the STS-97 Space Shuttle mission in solving the Solar Array
tensioning cable problem. Donovan's work at the Neutral Buoyancy Laboratory
(NBL), NASA's training pool, was relayed to the Mission Control Center
to provide the on-orbit astronauts near real-time direction.
For his support of
the NBL Integration and Engineering Team, Brent Carlisle was presented
with his Silver Snoopy. Carlisle was specifically honored for his contributions
in coordinating the complex mockup and trainer configurations that are
directly responsible for the safe, timely, and superior performance of
the Reconfiguration Diving Team at the NBL.
Astronaut Barbara
Morgan pinned the Snoopy award on SPACEHAB's Liz Cross, citing her accomplishment
for excellent work supporting the third ISS assembly flight on its Space
Vision System lighting analysis. Cross' models and calculations for shadow
predictions were hailed for being extraordinarily accurate and precise,
the quality of which contributed to the success and safety of two space
missions.
Manager of the International
Space Station (ISS) Stowage Subsystem, Lee Silveira, received the Silver
Snoopy for his outstanding support of the stowage of U.S. cargo on Russian
Progress supply missions. Silveira's trips to Baikonour, Russia in his
pursuit of perfection provided the much-needed hands-on representation
for stowage of U.S. cargo that resulted in the smooth processing from
the Russian Progress vehicle to the ISS.
This coveted award
is a sterling silver pin, flown aboard the Space Shuttle, in the form
of Snoopy wearing a space helmet and space suit. Recipients are also given
a certificate and a letter of commendation, personally signed by an astronaut,
citing appreciation of their outstanding performance. Based upon her astronaut
training and experience, Morgan concluded the events stating, "the
Snoopy is only given to 1% of the NASA and contractor workforce and the
fact that six SPACEHAB employees are receiving the award during this round
is just outstanding."
