Karol Bobko
Joins SPACEHAB Washington, D.C., March 16, 2000 - SPACEHAB, Inc. today announced that Karol "Bo" Bobko has joined the Company's Johnson Engineering organization as Vice President for Product Development. Bobko will be responsible for all hardware development at SPACEHAB, serving commercial and government customers as well as SPACEHAB-funded development projects. A former astronaut and retired U.S. Air Force colonel, Bobko joins SPACEHAB after more than 11 years as a principal with Booz Allen and Hamilton, where he managed space system operations in the company's Houston/Clear Lake office. "Bo joins our team at a critical time, when activity is increasing dramatically on all of our projects, both commercial and government," said SPACEHAB President and Chief Operating Officer David A Rossi. "His leadership will be essential to completing these projects on time and within budget." Bobko started his Air Force career as a fighter pilot, became a test pilot and was selected an astronaut in the Air Force Manned Orbiting Laboratory Program. He was detailed to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) as an astronaut in 1970. During his years at NASA he had many technical and management assignments. His crew assignments included serving as a member of the astronaut support crew for the Apollo-Soyuz Test Project, piloting the maiden flight of the Space Shuttle Challenger in 1983 (STS-6) and serving as commander of Shuttle missions 51-D and 51-J (1985). He is an Associate Fellow of the Society of Experimental Test Pilots and President of the Association of Space Explorers - US. Born in New York City, Bobko is a graduate of Brooklyn Technical High School, the U.S. Air Force Academy (first graduating class, 1959), and the University of Southern California (M.S., aerospace engineering, 1970).
