1998 Winners of NASA’s Goldin-Stokes Mentor-Protégé Award

Houston, Texas, Aug. 24, 1998 — Johnson Engineering Corporation and Bergaila Engineering Services, Inc., have been notified by NASA that their team has won the Goldin-Stokes Mentor-Protégé Award for 1998. The NASA Mentor-Protégé program is designed to increase participation of small and disadvantaged businesses (SDBs) in NASA contracts and to foster long-term business relationships between SDBs and major NASA prime contractors.

Johnson Engineering is the first small business to win the mentor award, while Bergaila Engineering Services is the first woman-owned business protégé to do so. The award was presented at NASA’s 3rd Annual Mentor Protégé Conference at the Sheraton Burlington Hotel in Burlington, Vermont, on August 18, 1998.

The Johnson Engineering-Bergalia Engineering Services team was selected from a highly competitive pool of candidates by an independent panel of judges. The partnership was cited for several outstanding accomplishments, including enhancing contract performance, involving the protégé in critical activities on highly technical projects, and success in winning high-tech contracts with other federal agencies.

Headquartered in Houston, Texas, Johnson Engineering is a wholly-owned subsidiary of SPACEHAB, Inc., of Vienna, Va. Johnson Engineering is a highly diversified enterprise primarily engaged in design, development, fabrication and integration of technology products and services. Employing more than 400 people, the Corporation's core businesses include design engineering for electrical, mechanical, and software systems, aquatic/ocean engineering, fabrication, space systems, and systems integration.

Bergaila Engineering Services is one of the Bergaila Companies, a Houston-based group of organizations involved in consulting engineering and technical project-oriented staffing for the Aerospace, Process, and Manufacturing industries. Bergaila Engineering Services was started in 1996 to execute specialty vessel engineering and Finite Element Analysis work for the process industry. In a short time, the company has grown to include a wide array of other specialized, highly technical, engineering services and has accomplished this transition by using the same core of engineers and designers in the full matrix of industries it serves.
