SPACEHAB Executive Receives Federal Committee Appointment
Vienna, VA, April 1, 1998 — SPACEHAB, Inc. executive and
former astronaut Dr. Bernard A. Harris, Jr. has been appointed to the National
Deafness and Other Communication Disorders Advisory Council of the National Institutes
of Health, it was recently announced by Donna Shalala, Secretary of Health and
Human Services.
The NIH Council's role is to advise Secretary Shalala on issues of health and research regarding communication disorders. Dr. Harris has amassed over twelve years of scientific medical research experience and has authored and/or co-authored numerous scientific reference articles related to this field.
Dr. Harris is Vice President, Microgravity and Life Sciences, a position he has held since joining SPACEHAB in 1996. Working from the Company's Houston, Texas office, he is responsible for expanding the Company's markets and generating new business in Microgravity and Life Sciences research on SPACEHAB modules flying aboard the U.S. Shuttle and for International Space Station research missions.
In addition to his SPACEHAB executive role, Dr. Harris is an active medical practitioner. He is an associate professor of internal medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch and the Baylor College of Medicine, a clinical professor at the University of Texas School of Medicine, and an adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Public Health.
Dr. Harris became a NASA astronaut in July 1991. He flew as a Mission Specialist on Shuttle Mission STS-55, April 26 - May 6, 1993. During his second mission (STS-63, February 3-11, 1995) he served as payload commander and operated a variety of commercial and scientific microgravity experiments in the SPACEHAB Module on board the Shuttle.
Dr. Harris holds a Bachelor's Degree in Biology from the University of Houston, a Master's Degree in Biomedical Science from the University of Texas Medical Branch, and a Doctorate in Medicine from Texas Tech University School of Medicine. He completed his residency in Internal Medicine at the Mayo Clinic. He also completed a National Research Council Fellowship at NASA Ames Research Center and trained as a flight surgeon at the Aerospace School of Medicine, Brooks Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas.
