Baker Appointed President of SPACEHAB ASTROTECH Unit
Vienna, VA, March 11, 1998 — George D. Baker has been appointed President
of ASTROTECH Space Operations, a subsidiary of SPACEHAB, Inc. (NASDAQ: SPAB).
His appointment was recently approved by the Board of Directors of SPACEHAB,
the leading commercial space services company supporting manned and unmanned
missions in space.
Mr. Baker has served as SPACEHAB vice president and general manager of the ASTROTECH subsidiary since February 1997, when SPACEHAB purchased ASTROTECH from Northrop-Grumman. He remains a corporate vice president of the parent company, SPACEHAB, Inc.
SPACEHAB Chairman and CEO Shelley A. Harrison cited Baker's more than fourteen year tenure with ASTROTECH as he announced the appointment: "George was in on the ground floor of this pioneering commercial venture for satellite check out, fueling and launch processing," he said. "The record speaks for itself: over 70 satellites have been processed by ASTROTECH at its primary Cape Canaveral and Vandenberg facilities. It is that performance and track record which led Boeing to contract with us to build its futuristic Sea Launch facility in Long Beach."
Mr. Baker has been with ASTROTECH since 1984, following a 20-year career at NASA where he was involved with the Delta and Space Shuttle launch programs and the Space Shuttle Operations Office at NASA Headquarters in Washington, D.C. He developed NASA's shuttle launch services contract and negotiated the contracts for the first ten commercial satellite programs launched on the Space Shuttle. Additionally, Mr. Baker worked with the world aviation insurance industry to stimulate expanded capacity for spacecraft insurance required to meet the increased coverage demands of commercial satellites launched on the Shuttle.
Mr. Baker holds a Bachelor of Sciences Degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Cincinnati. |
