Mr. Fitts brings more than 33 years experience
in human space operations (including mission control console
expertise gained during the Apollo, Skylab, and Shuttle Programs)
to the SPACEHAB executive team. As Vice President, SPACEHAB
Government Services, Mr. Fitts oversees and develops SPACEHAB's
efforts to capture new business opportunities, including
continuing to support ISS initiatives and future efforts
in support of NASA's Vision for Space Exploration.
Mr. Fitts'
extensive aerospace experience includes playing an active
role in the Shuttle development process (he helped develop
elements of the Shuttle flight software, including the crew
displays and the redundancy management algorithms used in
the onboard computers). He also developed
a number of mission control center processes and algorithms
to evaluate system performance and operation in real-time.
Mr.
Fitts led the team of flight controllers monitoring spacecraft
guidance, navigation, and control systems during both the
Skylab Program and for the first four Shuttle launches.
He also served as a propulsion system controller during STS-7.
He subsequently held increasingly responsible management
positions within NASA's Mission Operations Directorate,
ultimately serving as Chief, Systems Division were he oversaw
the efforts of over 400 Shuttle and International Space Station
systems flight controllers.
Mr. Fitts holds several awards
including the Rotary Stellar Award Nominee in 2003, the
NASA Acquisition Improvement Award in 1997, the JSC Certificate
of commendation in 1990 and the NASA Exceptional Service
Medal in 1983.
He earned both a B.A. in Physics and an M.S.E.E.
from the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, Arkansas.
