Incorporated in
1984, SPACEHAB is a leading provider of commercial space
services. As an enabler for access to space, its three business
units, SPACEHAB Flight Services, SPACEHAB Government Services
and Astrotech Space Operations provide all
levels of product and service support including research
and logistics expertise and hardware, engineering and analysis
services, payload processing and delivery.
Follows is a brief description of these unique business units:
SPACEHAB Flight Services
SPACEHAB's commercialization initiative began with the development
of a privately owned, pressurized module that flies in the
space shuttle's cargo bay and significantly increases the
amount of working and living space available to the astronauts.
Today, through the SPACEHAB Flight Services segment, the
Company develops, maintains, and operates a variety of assets
including pressurized habitation modules, unpressurized cargo
carriers, and equipment ferrying containers that have flown
on nineteen space shuttle missions (as of December 2005),
including six research missions and thirteen space station
resupply missions - seven to the Russian Mir and
six to the International Space Station (ISS). This extensive
expertise is now benefiting ISS assembly completion and operations
activities as well as new space exploration initiatives.
Astrotech Space Operations
As the leading commercial supplier of satellite launch processing
services in the U.S., Astrotech truly is the commercial gateway
to space. Offering customers an alternative to using government-owned
facilities, Astrotech serves a range of expendable launch
vehicles including Atlas, Delta, Pegasus, Sea Launch, and
Taurus, as well as secondary payloads on the space shuttle.
Astrotech, at its company-owned facilities, supports launches
from NASA's Kennedy Space Center/Cape Canaveral Air Force
Station and Vandenberg Air Force Base and provides payload
processing services and facilities maintenance support for
the Sea Launch program at their California home port. With
more than 230 satellites processed, Astrotech is positioned
to meet rising demand and accommodate larger five-meter class
satellites and payload fairings.
SPACEHAB Government Services
Expanding SPACEHAB's core business of supporting people
living and working in space, the SPACEHAB Government Services
(SGS) segment includes specialized engineering support services
for the Government and various commercial industries. As
a NASA contractor of excellence for over 30 years, this unit
offers a wide array of products and services in the engineering,
program integration and control, and product development
disciplines. Specifically, SGS manages projects in need of
comprehensive engineering solutions and provides unique capabilities
such as specialty engineering, hardware design and development,
and configuration and data management.
